Hugo Guillamón took the winning spot kick in the Trofeo Naranja, earning Valencia CF the victory at Mestalla against AC Milan. The VCF Academy graduate gave his thoughts on the game following the penalty shootout.
"We'd agreed earlier that I would take the fifth penalty. When it was up to me to take the winning kick, I stayed calm. I knew that I was going to score.
I was asked if I wanted to take one, and I said that I was. I'm used to this type of thing, and I got the fifth penalty. It was perfect," he told VCF Media.
Guillamón was pleased with the overall performance of the team, who were able to shut out their Italian opposition in regular time.
"AC Milan are a great, historic club, with great players. We knew that it was going to be a very tough game, but I think that we played well overall. We maybe struggled a bit in the first half, but the team remained solid -which is the important thing- and kept a clean sheet. I'm sure that, playing in this way, the wins will come."
"We're very happy to be back here, and to have our fans here again. It helps us a lot when we feel their support and affection, and we hope that during the season we can all enjoy ourselves here."
"We've been preparing for several weeks now. We're excited about the league season starting. We're going to give our all to fight for every point, which is the important thing," added Guillamón, who once again occupied a spot in defensive midfield in the Trofeo Naranja.
"I'm feeling better every day. It's not a completely new position for me. The important thing is to work hard to feel more comfortable, and to help the team in whatever position I play."
